Why motivation is stopping you from reaching your goals

One of the most common questions I get asked, and this has been coming up a lot lately, is "How do you stay constantly motivated?" Here's the short answer: I DON'T.

During my 10 years as an international level athlete, I can definitely tell you that it is impossible to stay constantly motivated. There were more days when I didn't feel like getting out of bed at 5am than days I wanted to. 

So what good is motivation then? How do you find the inspiration to keep going, especially when life feels like it's going backwards?

The match theory

Trying to stay constantly motivated is like lighting matches to stay warm. It'll give off a little heat for a few seconds but it's not going to save you from a cold night. So what do you do then? This is an easy one to answer: you build a fire! That fire is your purpose - your reason WHY. When you have that...you become driven...and now you're unstoppable!

When you are driven, it doesn't matter how many things go wrong, how many times you fail, how many times life tries to stop you. You find a way to keep pushing.
